On Harmonious Co-Existence

So, a long time ago – maybe as much as 10 years ago, I was sitting in a session (informal musical gathering), and was being grumpy and uncharitable about some other participants, probably because it was a very popular session, and it was taking a long way to work round the circle.  I don’t remember exactly what I said to Ken Caird, probably something along the lines of: “but why do they all have to sit there?”.  However, I have always remembered Ken’s reply : ” Well, everybody’s got be somewhere.

And here we are, no more than 10 years later, and it’s finally emerged as a song.  Thanks to Ken Caird for the inspiration, and the thought.

Everybody Has To Be

This world is surely shrinking, gets smaller day by day,
And sometimes I get to thinking, there’s people in my way
They come crowding in around me, awaking all my fears
Then the words a wise man told me, come ringing in my ears
And singing down the years

Everybody has to be somewhere (somewhere everybody has to be)
Everybody has to be somewhere (it’s true)
And since I have to be somewhere, in this world
I’m happy to be here with you.

If you’re high upon a mountain, or sailing on the sea
Or beside a crystal fountain, you’re where you have to be
Here today and gone tomorrow, that’s our only guarantee
That’s our joy and it’s our sorrow, come share this space with me

Everybody has to be somewhere (somewhere everybody has to be)
Everybody has to be somewhere (it’s true)
And since I have to be somewhere, in this world
I’m happy to be here with you.

I’m not saying that it’s kismet, and I don’t believe in fate
Place your order with the waiter, (but)
You can only eat the meal, that’s lying on your plate.
It’s there upon your plate

Everybody has to be somewhere (somewhere everybody has to be)
Everybody has to be somewhere (it’s true)
And since I have to be somewhere, in this world
I’m happy to be here with you.

You may not recognise me, or even know my name
I don’t know how you got here, don’t see why you came
But I’m happy to see you , all the same
You can hate the clothes I’m wearing, you may dislike this song
But for now we’re here together, So let’s try to get along
‘Cause we won’t be here for long

Everybody has to be somewhere (somewhere everybody has to be)
Everybody has to be somewhere (it’s true)
And since I have to be somewhere, in this world
I’m happy to be here with you.
